Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) is the 3rd oldest University in Greece. Since 1920, contributes consistently and continuously to Greek and European primary sector development, by conducting basic and applied research in agricultural related sciences. AUA conducts 1/3 of the agricultural research in Greece.

The University is situated on a green campus that straddles close to the Acropolis, at the heart of the ancient Olive Grove. AUA counts 178 academic staff, 300 supportive staff, 5,000 students, 450 MSc students and 250 PhD students. AUA’s research funding schemes come from the private sector as well EU and Greek research projects. AUA contributions address a wide range of issues related to food safety and environmental protection significantly affecting the daily lives of Greek and Europeans citizens: food quality and safety, water resource conservation, organic farming, alternative energy sources, biotechnological applications in agriculture, information and communications technology.


The Smart Farming Technology Group (SFTGroup), belonging to the department of Natural Resource Management and Agricultural Engineering,l represents AUA in the Smart Droplets project. The SFTGroup has coordinated the H2020 OPTIMA Project (09/2018 – 12/2021) for the development of an Optimised Integrated Pest Management system to precisely detect and control plant diseases in perennial crops and open-field vegetables. Was a WP leader in the H2020 project BigDataGrapes (2018-2020), WP leader in H2020 Innoseta thematic network (2018-2021) and participated in two more H2020 projects in the field of precision agriculture as partner, namely IoF2020 (Jan 2017 – Dec 2020) and APOLLO (May 2016 – March 2019). Additionally, the SFTGroup coordinated the 2020 Smart-AKIS thematic network on innovation-driven research in smart farming technologies (March 2016-August 2018) and H2020 GATES project for the development of a serious game for precision agriculture adoption in the EU (Jan 2017-June 2019) Members of the team have participated in several National R&D programs on the application of novel / smart technologies in agriculture and in several European and bilateral programs.
